Example two weeks notice template for retail

Alex Morgan October 30, 2026 Jamie Lee Acme Inc. Dear Jamie Lee, Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position as Sales Associate at Acme Inc.. My last day of work will be November 13, 2026. This serves as my two weeks’ notice. Thank you for the opportunity to work at Acme Inc.. I appreciate the support and experience I have gained during my time here. During my remaining time, I will do everything I can to ensure a smooth transition, including wrapping up current projects and documenting my work. I will work all of my scheduled shifts through my last day and am happy to help train a teammate on opening, closing and register procedures. I wish you and the team continued success. Sincerely, Alex Morgan

Tips for your two weeks notice template for retail

  • Tell your store manager face to face first. Retail managers usually hear about resignations from the person, not from a posted schedule.
  • Ask whether shifts already scheduled after your last day will be removed, so you are not marked as a no-show.
  • Say plainly that you will work every scheduled shift through your last day if that is true. It reassures a manager who is short on hours.
  • Check whether your employer wants the resignation entered in an HR portal or app as well as handed to the manager.

What to avoid

  • Quitting by group text or in front of customers or coworkers
  • Calling out for your last shifts after giving notice
  • Forgetting to return keys, name badge, uniform or fuel and expense cards

Things that are different in retail

Your schedule is the plan. Many stores publish shifts a week or more ahead. When you give notice, ask your manager to rebuild the schedule around your last day. If shifts are already posted beyond it, ask that they be removed and confirm by message or email, so there is no confusion later.

Coverage is the real worry. A manager’s first thought is usually “who covers Saturday?”. Offering to work your remaining shifts, to swap shifts where the store allows it, or to train someone on the till, opening or closing procedures gives them something concrete to work with.

Part-time and seasonal staff. The same courtesy applies if you work part time, even if two weeks feels long for a few shifts a week. If your offer from another employer starts sooner, say so honestly and offer the best date you can.

A last-week checklist for store staff

  • Return keys, alarm codes, name badge, uniform and any company card.
  • Use up or ask about your employee discount; it often ends on your last day.
  • Ask when and how your final paycheck will be delivered, and confirm your mailing address.
  • Ask about unused vacation or paid time off and whether it is paid out.
  • Ask a manager or supervisor you worked well with whether they would be a reference.
  • Collect your own belongings from lockers and break rooms.

Frequently asked questions

How much notice do I have to give a retail job?

In most of the US, employment is at-will and two weeks is a courtesy rather than a law. Some employers have a written policy, and a few contracts require more, so check your handbook.

Do I need a formal letter for a store job?

Often a conversation is enough, but a short letter or email gives you a dated record of your last day and shows professionalism. It costs you five minutes.

Can I give notice before the holiday season?

Yes, but the team will feel it most then. If you can choose your timing, a longer notice period or an offer to help train a replacement is appreciated. You are not obliged to stay.

Will I be paid for my last shifts and unused vacation?

You are owed pay for time worked. Whether unused vacation is paid out depends on your state and your employer’s policy, so ask HR or your manager and get the answer in writing.
