Plan to finish most of this list a few days before your last day, because people leave early, systems get switched off and managers get busy. Use it as a prompt rather than a rule book. Some items will not apply to your job.
Work handover
- Share a one-page handover document with open projects, deadlines, key contacts and where files and logins are kept (company logins should belong to the company, not to you).
- Hold a short walkthrough with whoever takes over your work.
- Update shared calendars, recurring meetings and ownership of any shared documents or accounts.
- Set an out-of-office or forwarding message that names who to contact.
Equipment and access
- Return laptop, phone, keys, badge, cards and anything else company-owned, and ask for a receipt or confirmation.
- Remove personal files, photos and accounts from company devices, and company data from personal ones, as policy allows. Never take confidential company material with you.
- Ask IT what happens to your accounts and when access will end.
Pay and benefits
- Ask when the final paycheck arrives, how it is delivered and what it includes.
- Ask whether unused vacation or PTO will be paid out.
- Submit outstanding expenses and timesheets before your last day.
- Confirm the date your health insurance ends and how to continue coverage if you need it (for example COBRA in the US, usually at your own cost).
- Ask about your 401(k) or similar plan: leaving it, rolling it over, and any vesting dates you are close to.
- Ask about HSA or FSA balances, commuter benefits, bonuses and any stock or equity.
- Confirm your mailing address for tax forms such as your W-2.
People and references
- Ask people you worked well with whether they would be a reference, and for permission to use their name.
- Exchange personal contact details with colleagues you want to stay in touch with. Do not take client lists or anything confidential.
- Connect with colleagues on professional networks after your last day, not before, so your departure is not announced early.
- If you have an exit interview, decide in advance what you will say. Be honest, constructive and measured.
Your own records
- Save your own pay stubs, benefits information and any letters about your employment. Do not forward company confidential material to a personal address.
- Keep a copy of your resignation letter and any written confirmation of your last day.
- Update your resume while your achievements are fresh. The resume keyword scanner can help you match it to your next job post.
A short goodbye message
Send this on your last day, or the day before, to the people you want to stay in touch with. Adapt it so that it sounds like you:
On the last day itself
Do not leave anything for the final hour. Say your goodbyes, thank your manager in person, confirm that everything on this list is done and leave on good terms. If you are not sure about your last day, calculate it here. If you have not yet told your employer, start with the how to give two weeks notice guide.
Not legal advice. This page is general information. Notice rules, final-pay deadlines and benefits differ by country, state and employer, and your contract can change the answer. Check your own paperwork, or ask a qualified employment professional if a lot is at stake.
