Example nurse resignation letter

Alex Morgan October 30, 2026 Jamie Lee Acme Inc. Dear Jamie Lee, Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position as Registered Nurse at Acme Inc.. My last day of work will be November 13, 2026. This serves as my two weeks’ notice. Thank you for the opportunity to work at Acme Inc.. I appreciate the support and experience I have gained during my time here. During my remaining time, I will do everything I can to ensure a smooth transition, including wrapping up current projects and documenting my work. I will make sure my patient handoffs are thorough and complete before my final shift. I wish you and the team continued success. Sincerely, Alex Morgan

Tips for your nurse resignation letter

  • Check your unit policy. Many hospitals expect four weeks, or more for specialty roles.
  • Confirm how scheduled shifts, PTO and float obligations will be handled.
  • Ask HR how to keep your license and certification records, and request references from charge nurses early.
  • Abandoning a patient assignment can have licensing implications, so complete your final shifts.

What to avoid

  • Leaving mid-assignment without a handoff
  • Ignoring any contractual sign-on bonus repayment terms
